Every parent surely loves their children. Most parents even consider their children are the best compare to the others. Parents will do everything they can do to fulfill their children’s wants, especially if it is for good, it will be greatly supported. However, it does not apply to Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. They both have a different mindset from other parents. They regard children as a troublesome mistake.

Matilda Wormwood is a smart little girl with amazing abilities. She taught herself many things that her parents never taught her. She could read perfectly when she was three. One time Matilda asked her father for a book and was rejected, but Matilda did not give up. She went to the city library by herself to get some books. Loneliness and lack of attention from her parents actually made Matilda becomes independent. Matilda’s life at home is different from other kids. Her father is busy selling cars (at inappropriate prices), meanwhile her mother goes for Bingo everyday and her brother is not friendly to her at all. Matilda’s family is a television admirer and loves to watch unhelpful TV shows. Matilda’s habit of reading annoyed her parents and brother. Her family does not support the good habit and instead think of Matilda as a freak.

Matilda’s days become brighter as she enters the school. Matilda is very happy to be able to learn as much as possible in the school. She also meets a kindhearted and caring homeroom teacher, Ms. Honey. However, Matilda’s school life is not that good. She has to face Miss Trunchbull, a terrible headmistress who loves to torture children. Matilda’s effort to avenge Miss Trunchbull’s mischievous deeds led her to discover something unique in her, a superpower! Then, how will Matilda use her superpower? Will she succeed in getting rid of the headmistress’s evil deeds?

Books by Roald Dahl have known for its fascinating stories and wild imagination, including Matilda. Each character in Matilda has a unique vibe and gives deep impression to the readers. An entertaining storyline and easy-to-understand grammar become a plus for this book. In addition, some pages are equipped with aesthetic illustrations by Quentin Blake which helps the readers to shape the description of the characters as well as the situations depicted in the story. With 233 pages, the book is neither too dense nor short, so that it is suitable to be read by aged 7-12 years old and over. Even adults will be interested in reading this book. The author implies criticism towards the parents who are insensitive to their children and delivers the message “treat your children nicely!”. Matilda tells the readers that reading books is very important. By reading books, Matilda found her strength to face her ‘unhealthy’ family environment. Despite getting unpleasant treatments from her family, Matilda becomes a patient and more mature at a very young age. Matilda’s courage provides a strong moral value to the readers: ‘You can do it! Just be brave to do what you think is right, you do not need to be worry.’

Matilda describes in detail various scenes that happen in this book, starting from the make sense scenes to the nonsense one. Miss Trunchbull punishes her students in physical punishments. She grabs a hair braid of a little girl which she does not like, then lifted the girl and swung her in the air until finally thrown her away. Miss Trunchbull did it as if she is a hammer throwing athlete. When a student eats her cake, Miss Trunchbull punishes him to eat a large cake. The cake must be completely eaten. The boy tries so hard not to vomit it. Although the scenes are told lightly and humorously, still the scenes are a bit creepy if done by a headmistress to her students in real life. Therefore, parental guidance is needed for children who want to read this book.

Overall, with its strength and weakness, Matilda is worth to read because it is full of moral values and messages that would open the readers mind. The book gives children a message of the important of reading, and it gives a message to parents about the importance of affection and care for their children.
